GK had the pleasure of speaking with Mr. Takashi Yoshida, president of Meiwa Corporation, about Japan’s edge in resource efficiency and customer focus, EV battery trends, the company’s strategic pivot toward eco-businesses in Asia, and its ongoing global expansion rooted in adaptability and a pioneering spirit. Read an excerpt of the interview below.
What is it that gives Japan a competitive advantage against other regional competitors?
Japan’s strength lies in maximizing limited resources, a customer-first mindset, and the keiretsu system, which supports global competitiveness.
What EV battery trends have you seen recently?
Battery makers focus on safety, energy efficiency, and cost. Material scarcity drives up costs, but innovations in assembly and materials help offset this. Simplifying supply chains is key, as seen in policies like China’s “dual circulation” strategy.
Which area of your business are you currently focusing the most on developing?
We’re focused on lifestyle, environment, and mobility, using both “with China” and “China Plus One” approaches. In China and India, we’re building eco-friendly lubricant and recycling businesses. In Indonesia, we’re promoting electric bikes to reduce pollution.
What are your future and global expansion plans?
With a 75-year history in diverse sectors and geographies, including socialist countries such as Cuba and the former Soviet Union, we’ll continue evolving through adaptability and entrepreneurial spirit, aiming for agile international growth.
