Darts, in its modern form, may have originated in the early 20th century. But it wasn’t until the 1960s that the game truly found its mark in Japan, introduced through British embassies and pubs. Since then, it has soared in popularity. A 2024 survey found that over 6.5 million enthusiasts of all ages play darts across the country each year.
By combining darts with technology, Dartslive Co., Ltd. has been instrumental in increasing the popularity of the game in Japan. President Azuma Abe highlighted, “By building an online platform for inclusive communities, we are working to make darts a ‘lifetime sport’ that can be enjoyed not only by young people but also by the elderly and people with disabilities.” While darts has long been an accessible social activity, in recent years, it has also made its way into school sports programs and online youth tournaments, allowing students throughout Asia to compete with each other. Abe notes that “by building vibrant online communities, Dartslive is breaking down national barriers, bringing people together through the exciting and dynamic game of darts.”
Dartslive has established a dominant presence domestically, with over 3,000 outlets nationwide featuring their machines—equaling the number of outlets of the leading fast-food chain in Japan. Thanks to technology, it has been able to invent new ways to enjoy darts through tournaments and events. However, its sights are now set on further expansion, with key growth markets in Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. “We have to identify the local demands of the market and adjust our offerings to their tastes, which requires strong local partners,” Abe said.
