We spoke to Shun Tsuji<\/strong>, president of\u00a0Kishun Co., Ltd.,\u00a0<\/strong>to learn about Japan’ s used jewelry market, and his thoughts on ‘urban mines’.<\/p>\n

\u4e8b\u696d\u5185\u5bb9 <\/span>do you believe is the main reason that customers choose Japanese luxury goods over alternatives from other countries?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

I think one thing that it boils down to is how specialized Japanese businesses are. All companies try to pursue a task like an art, <\/span>similar to<\/span> traditional activities such as martial arts. While Mikimoto deals with many kinds of jewelry, they are best k<\/span>nown for their founding product; pearls. A similar thing can be said for other famous brands, such as Seiko. Without diversifying too much, they <\/span>are able to<\/span> foster a particular corporate culture and really appeal to customers.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why do you believe Japan\u2019s secondhand market has evolved to the current <\/span>high level<\/span> of today?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

I think that we have experienced several waves of popularity in the secondhand goods <\/span>market,<\/span> however, the current boom is unprecedented. This could be due to economic factors; during the \u2018bubble\u2019 period we became accustomed to mass production and consumption, and now there is<\/span> a large pool of inventory available on the market. Also, we are returning to the mentality of valuing older things and <\/span>limiting<\/span> the <\/span>amount of waste produced. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Currently, the <\/span>Japanese <\/span>secondhand market is expected to increase to 4 trillion yen by 2030<\/span>. Since childhood, we have always been told to value what we have, from toys that our grandparents bought us to the cars we <\/span>purchase<\/span>. Because of this mentality, the quality level of secondhand goods in Japan is excellent.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the basis behind your concept of \u2018urban mines<\/span>\u2019,<\/span> and how is it contributing to a more sustainable jewelry industry?\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

I have been in the jewelry industry for several decades, and in my <\/span>previous<\/span> work <\/span>I found that certain gemstones<\/span> were discarded in the secondhand market. While platinum and diamond <\/span>retained<\/span> value for the B2B market, we found that colored stones were often discarded<\/span>, given that it was cheaper and easier to <\/span>procure<\/span> new ones.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I often pondered whether we could <\/span>actually do<\/span> something with these stones and bring out further value from them. This led me to form my current corporate vision, which <\/span>eliminates<\/span> the term \u2018worthless\u2019 from the <\/span><\/span>world.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
