GK sat down with President Hitoshi Ohira of Midori Precisions Co., Ltd., where we talked about the company’s sensor innovations for smart city applications, rising global demand for contactless and compact technologies, and its strategic push into markets like India and the U.S. through e-commerce and key partnerships. Read an excerpt of the interview below.
What sensor innovations have you developed in response to growing IoT demand in smart cities?
Accurate position detection is essential for smart city infrastructure. This has opened up new opportunities for us, especially in the construction sector, where advanced machinery increasingly requires motion and angle sensors. We’ve successfully entered this space by meeting that need.
Which of your products is currently most in demand?
Our top-selling item is the contactless rotary potentiometer. Looking ahead, we’re focusing on encoders, which are becoming crucial in our data-driven world. Another key challenge is designing smaller sensors that can handle high torque, which is crucial for improving energy efficiency.
What’s your growth strategy, especially internationally?
We’re working to expand overseas, especially in China, India, and the U.S., by partnering with large commercial entities. Our e-commerce platform supports this goal by providing adaptable components to a wide customer base. Currently, 10% of our sales are international, and we plan to increase that to 40%, with India’s infrastructure growth expected to play a significant role.
